RAIL ENTHUSIAST DAY aboard Amtrak’s Winter Park Express to honor the 90th ANNIVERSARY of the first winter sports train to Hot Sulphur Springs (2/9/39) on the former Denver & Salt Lake RR. Those trips (3 trains needed to haul 2200 passengers), led to the infamous Ski Train, in 1940, when the Winter Park Resort opened. What a great excuse to ride the “new" ski train! We can travel to the Fraser station and observe the engine “runaround” activities, then take the free shuttle back to Winter Park Resort and hopefully catch the California Zephyr popping out of the Moffat Tunnel. A free ride on the Cabriolet, then some shopping, then lunch with a toast to the ski train, then some more shopping or people watching, then perhaps take the free shuttle back to Fraser to board the train at its origin for the “extra miles.” Please contact the Chapter at: conductor@nrhsintermountain.org after you have purchased your tickets at: amtrak.com We want a headcount for the train so we can stick together, hopefully in the first coach. The Thursday fares are usually $9 each way if you purchase early enough. Don’t forget the prompt for senior fare, if it applies.
