Intermountain Chapter History

We’ve been helping preserve Colorado’s rich railroading history since 1961

The Intermountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society was chartered in 1961 and became active in locating historical rail equipment as well as operating numerous rail excursions, before mainline steam power largely vanished. The Chapter owned a pair of railcars and even, briefly, a large steam locomotive, which have all been donated to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. Today’s excursions are typically by chartered bus to various historic railroad venues in the region.

The Intermountain Chapter holds monthly luncheon meetings featuring a rail-oriented program, usually on the second Saturday of the month at Malones Clubhouse Grill in Arvada, NE quadrant of 64th & Indiana, at 12:00 Noon. Program subjects will be available on our events page along with any meeting updates. All are welcome to peruse its features, which continue to grow.

One of the most important functions of the Chapter is making heritage grant donations to various Colorado rail history venues for ongoing Preservation-Restoration-Operation projects, hence the moniker P-R-O Fund. The Fund is supported partially by members’ membership dues and donations, including railroadiana items such as books, models, artwork, and more, which are sold at various swap meets and train shows. The Chapter appreciates the generosity of its members and the recipients are most appreciative of the financial assistance that supports their work.

Chapter membership benefits include free admission to the Colorado Railroad Museum, except during certain special events, advance notice of excursions and events, and discounts on excursions.

The Intermountain Chapter is one of over 100 local Chapters around the nation and it welcomes new members who enjoy the fellowship of other railroad and rail history enthusiasts. The Chapter also encourages membership in the national NRHS which hosts annual conventions and regional conferences. Information is available elsewhere on this website and at the national NRHS website.
